She explains how cancer cells can adapt and change their characteristics, enabling them to spread to other parts of the body. This acquired property, called cellular plasticity, allows these cells to adapt to the pressures and metabolic demands of very different environments. For example, metastatic cancer cells seem to be able to survive in new environments by reprogramming themselves to outcompete other cells for iron; this helps fuel their growth while also preventing immune defenders in the area from getting enough iron.
