Betulin is an extract from the bark of the white birch tree (Betula alba). Chaga mushrooms convert betulin from its birch tree host into betulinic acid which is more biologically active in humans. Betulinic acid has been studied for its potential to treat cancer. In laboratory tests, betulinic acid has been found to induce apoptosis, or cell death, in tumor cells. This action is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in cancer cell growth. Betulinic acid also appears to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-malarial properties. Currently, studies are underway to investigate the potential of betulinic acid as a therapeutic agent in cancer treatment.
