The anti-cancer properties of Ursolic Acid.

Ursolic acid is a natural triterpenoid found in many plants and fruits (rosemary, sage, apples, bilberries, cranberries, elderflower, peppermint, lavender, oregano, and thyme).

Studies have shown that ursolic acid has the ability to inhibit the growth of various types of cancer cells, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and lung cancers. It has been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, by activating the extrinsic pathway of caspase-mediated apoptosis. Ursolic acid has also been shown to inhibit angiogenesis, or the formation of new blood vessels, which is important for cancer metastasis.

In addition to its anti-cancer properties, ursolic acid has also been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-microbial properties. Studies have found that ursolic acid can reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating the activity of nuclear factor kappa B. It has also been shown to reduce blood glucose levels and reduce the proliferation of bacteria.

4-week cycles (4 weeks On/1-2 weeks Off)

  • Inhibition of RAF/ERK pathway and IKK/NF-κB pathway {study}
  • Fatty acid synthase inhibitor {study} Ursolic acid strongly inhibits FAS with an IC50 value of 6 mg/mL, acting mainly on the MAT domain and weakly on the KS domain (Tian et al. 2011)
  • Ursolic Acid Attenuates TGF-b1-Induced Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) in NSCLC by Targeting Integrin aVb5/MMPs Signaling {study}
  • Activation of autophagy {study}
  • Ursolic acid silences CYP19A1/aromatase to suppress gastric cancer growth {ref}
